The NBA has no key numbers worth buying, no listed-starter rule, and no state that has actually banned a prop. Almost everything written about picking an NBA sportsbook is answering questions the sport does not ask.

Start with the thing that will save you the most time. If you searched for the best NBA betting subreddit on your way here, there is not one. r/nbabetting is banned, r/NBABets is private, and NBA discussion now lives in the r/sportsbook daily threads where standalone NBA posts are not allowed. Reddit’s own bulk lookup still returns cached member counts for banned subs, which is why half the lists you will find still recommend a community that does not exist. We go through the wreckage on the NBA subreddit page.

Which leaves the actual question. What makes one book better than another for basketball, and how much of the received wisdom survives contact with published rules and computed data.

There are no NBA key numbers

Football bettors arrive in basketball looking for the NBA’s 3. It does not exist. We computed the margin distribution from 19,234 regular season games and the peaks are in an unexpected place.

Final marginShare of games
14.04%
25.86%
35.86%
45.67%
56.65%
66.43%
76.76%
86.16%
95.74%
105.17%

Mean margin 10.81, median 9. The peaks are at 5, 6 and 7, not at 2 and 3 as most guides claim. And a margin of one is the least common outcome between one and nine, which is counterintuitive until you remember that late-game fouling exists specifically to turn one-point games into three-point games.

Converted into cents, the value of an NBA half point runs from about 8.4 cents at the 1 up to about 14.5 cents at the 7. On totals it is worse: the single most common total landed on 2.116% of games, with the next eleven all between 1.92% and 2.11%, which is a flat line. A half point on an NBA total is worth around four cents anywhere on the board.

Books charge 20 to 30 cents to buy that half point. There is no NBA number where that is close to a fair price.

One honest limitation

The public dataset we could reach ends with the 2014-15 season. The shape of the distribution is stable across every window we tested, from 1947 onwards and from 2010 onwards, so the conclusion that the NBA has no meaningful key numbers holds. The absolute level of totals has moved a long way since 2015 and we are not claiming otherwise.

Which is why price is everything

In the NFL, near the 3 and the 7, taking a better number beats taking a better price. In the NBA that trade never comes up, because no number is worth enough. Which makes basketball the sport where reduced juice does the most work.

The arithmetic is unforgiving and simple. At minus 110 you break even at 52.38%. At minus 105 you break even at 51.22%. A bettor hitting exactly 52.4% makes essentially nothing over 400 bets at minus 110 and roughly $1,000 on the same bet sizing at minus 105. Same bettor, same picks, different book.

The complication is that reduced juice offshore is rarely as broad as advertised. BetAnySports, which was the standard recommendation for years, rebranded to BetAnything in July 2025. Its reduced pricing is published as applying to straight bets on sides and totals, with parlays and teasers excluded, and it is reported to run on a stake band of roughly $1 to $500. Whether moneylines are included is not directly confirmed anywhere we could load, and the “sides and totals” wording suggests they are not. We could not reach the operator’s own pages, which redirect-looped on every attempt, so treat the whole thing as reported rather than confirmed and check it yourself before you deposit.

Heritage Sports offers what has been described as partial reduced juice for existing users. That is not a published term either.

Published NBA limits, book by book

Most books publish a single global payout cap and nothing sport-specific. Two do better than that.

BookWhat is published
bet365 (international)NBA outrights, spread, totals and moneyline 500,000 per 24 hours. NBA all other markets, including player props, 50,000. NCAA basketball 100,000 core and 25,000 other. All other basketball 25,000
bet365 (US)No sport split published. General ceiling of $5,000,000
DraftKings$1,650,000 maximum net payout per customer or group, across accounts
FanDuel$1,000,000 maximum winning limit per bet. Minimum wager $0.09
Fanatics$1,000,000 maximum payout. Maximum bet $500,000
BetMGMMaximum wager $10,000,000, and payout limits “cannot be applied to reduce a winning wager amount”
BetOnlineFull per-market table, below

BetOnline is the only offshore book publishing an actual NBA limit table, on its wagering limits page.

MarketSpreadMoneylineTotalTeam total
Full game$30,000$10,000$5,000$1,000
First half$3,000$3,000$3,000$500
Second half$5,000$5,000$5,000$500
Quarters$1,000$1,000$1,000n/a
Live$1,000n/a$1,000n/a

College basketball drops to $5,000 on the spread and the WNBA to $1,000 across the board. Parlays and teasers cap at $5,000. And there is a clause nobody quotes: once a limit is reached, you can bet it again every time the odds move, or every 61 seconds. That turns a $30,000 spread limit into something much larger if you are willing to sit there.

Note the shape of it. The full-game spread limit is thirty times the live limit. If you are a live bettor, the headline number is irrelevant to you. See the live betting comparison.

We could not obtain NBA limits from Heritage Sports, Pinnacle or Caesars. Their rules pages are JavaScript-rendered and return nothing to a fetch. Any competitor page showing you a limits table with those books in it did not get the numbers from the books.

Nobody banned NBA props

The persistent claim that states have banned NBA player props is wrong. Every restriction in force as of August 2026 is a voluntary operator decision, usually made at the league’s request.

The record is clear enough. In October 2024 the NBA asked books to bar props on two-way and ten-day contract players, and DraftKings and FanDuel came into alignment. In October 2025 the league flagged missed free throws, fouls and turnovers, at which point FanDuel had already pulled all three and DraftKings moved free throws to in-game only. Both were described explicitly as collaboration, not compliance.

On the regulatory side, Ohio’s governor called for a prop ban and a year later the Casino Control Commission has still not acted, with a spokesperson saying his goals are better served by a nationwide industry solution than by Ohio acting alone. New York’s Gaming Commission wrote to the leagues in February 2026 inviting them to petition for restrictions under existing law; the response was called underwhelming and the NBA did not respond at all. Virginia is at the research stage. No 2026 legislature passed anything touching NBA props.

The one genuine nuance: states such as New York and Massachusetts run approved-catalogue regimes, where a market is prohibited until it is approved. That is regulatory, but it is not an NBA prop ban, and it is not what the affiliate pages mean.

On the cases behind all of this: Jontay Porter pleaded guilty and his sentencing was adjourned. We could not verify what sentence was ultimately imposed and we are not going to guess. Terry Rozier pleaded not guilty and faces a superseding indictment from May 2026. Chauncey Billups’ trial is reported to be targeted for November 2026. Nothing is resolved.

What happens when your player sits

There is no basketball equivalent of the listed pitcher rule. A late scratch does not void the side or the total. It voids the prop, and the rule that decides whether it voids is the general participation clause, which is worded differently at every book.

  • DraftKings. Participation means the player entering the game according to the official box score.
  • BetMGM. Players do not have to start for action but must play for action. If a player takes no part in a game, the prop is cancelled.
  • BetOnline. All quoted players must start or play at least one play in the game.
  • Bookmaker.eu. All players must take the court and play for action.

Read those again. BetOnline’s wording contains “must start or play,” which is a different test from BetMGM’s “must play.” On a healthy scratch you get the same outcome. On a player who is active, warms up and never checks in, you may not.

The other thing to understand is that books grade off the box score, not off the injury report. The NBA’s report requires teams to file by 5pm local the day before, with a 1pm local deadline on the back end of a back to back, and continual updates thereafter, and it requires rest to be stated as a reason. None of that binds the sportsbook. Load management risk is not a reporting problem, it is a grading problem, and it sits entirely on you.

One more published detail that decides more bets than it should: BetMGM and Bookmaker.eu both make an NBA game official after 43 minutes of play, not after three quarters. College, WNBA, Summer League and European games go official at 35 minutes.

How to choose

  • Price first, always. With no key numbers, the half point you would buy is worth 8 to 14 cents on a spread and about four cents on a total. Nothing on the board justifies paying 20 to 30. Take the better price every time.
  • Check the live limit, not the game limit, if you bet in play. The gap at BetOnline is thirty to one.
  • Read the participation clause at whichever book you use for props. Four books, four different tests, and you only need to read yours once.
  • Prop caps are separate from game caps. bet365 caps NBA props at one tenth of its main market figure, which is the sort of thing you find out on the one bet you wanted to be big.
  • Do not choose on prop breadth. The markets that got pulled were pulled voluntarily and the books that still have them may pull them next, because the mechanism is a phone call rather than a rule.

2026-27 dates and schedule quirks

Preseason begins 3 October 2026. Opening night is Tuesday 20 October 2026, with Boston at Detroit at 3pm Eastern, Philadelphia at New York at 7pm, and Oklahoma City against San Antonio at 9.30pm. NBA Cup group play starts 30 October and the championship game is 11 December 2026 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, not in Las Vegas as in previous years.

The trade deadline is 11 February 2027, All-Star Weekend runs 19 to 21 February in Phoenix, the regular season ends 11 April 2027 with all thirty teams playing, and the play-in runs 13 to 16 April.

For bettors the useful quirk is scheduling density. Back to backs average 14.2 per team, the lowest since the NBA Cup began, and there are no four-in-five, eight-in-twelve or eighteen-in-thirty stretches anywhere on the calendar. Rest-based angles have less to work with this season than at any point in the last decade. There are also no games on Election Day, 3 November 2026.

Common questions

What is the best sportsbook for NBA betting?

Whichever one gives you the best price, because the NBA has no key numbers to shop for. Our computation on 19,234 games puts the peak margins at 5, 6 and 7, all within about a point of each other, and a half point is worth 8 to 14 cents on a spread and roughly four cents on a total. That removes the number-versus-price trade-off that exists in football and leaves price as the only lever. Beyond price, check the live betting limit rather than the game limit if you bet in play, and read the player participation clause at your book, because they differ.

Which state banned NBA props?

None. Every NBA prop restriction in force as of August 2026 is a voluntary operator decision, generally made after a request from the league. The NBA asked books to drop props on two-way and ten-day players in October 2024 and flagged missed free throws, fouls and turnovers in October 2025, and the major books complied voluntarily. Ohio’s commission declined to act despite the governor calling for a ban, New York invited the leagues to petition and the NBA did not respond, and no 2026 legislature passed anything. States with approved-catalogue regimes prohibit unapproved markets by default, but that is not an NBA prop ban.

What happens to my prop if the player is a late scratch?

It voids, but under the general participation rule rather than any NBA-specific rule, and the wording differs by book. DraftKings uses entry into the game per the official box score. BetMGM says players do not have to start but must play. BetOnline requires the player to start or play at least one play. Bookmaker.eu requires the player to take the court. Sides and totals are unaffected by a scratch at every book. Note that books grade off the box score, not off the NBA injury report, so a player who is listed active and never checks in is graded on what the box score says.

Are NBA key numbers 2 and 3?

No, and this is one of the most repeated errors in basketball betting content. Computed across 19,234 games, the peak margins are 5 at 6.65%, 6 at 6.43% and 7 at 6.76%, while 2 and 3 both sit at 5.86%. A margin of exactly one point is the least common outcome between one and nine, at 4.04%, because late-game intentional fouling converts one-point games into three and four-point games. The whole distribution is flat enough that no single number carries the weight the NFL’s 3 does.

Is there a best NBA betting subreddit?

Not any more. r/nbabetting is banned and r/NBABets is private, which is why the lists still recommending them are working from Reddit’s cached member counts for dead communities. NBA betting talk now happens inside the r/sportsbook daily threads, where standalone NBA posts are not permitted, and in r/sportsbetting. Prop discussion has largely migrated to r/PrizePicks and r/underdogfantasy.

When does the 2026-27 NBA season start?

Preseason on 3 October 2026 and opening night on Tuesday 20 October 2026, with three games: Boston at Detroit, Philadelphia at New York and Oklahoma City against San Antonio. The NBA Cup championship is 11 December at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the trade deadline is 11 February 2027, All-Star Weekend is 19 to 21 February in Phoenix, and the regular season ends 11 April 2027.
